Q 7 What are properties of soil?

The intermediate particles that are neither very smooth and nor too rough are called silt.

The smaller particles which are smooth are termed as clay.

The bigger soil particles which are coarse are termed as sand.

Q 6 What is sand, clay and silt?

On the basis of the soil texture, the soil can be classified into three categories: sandy soil, clayey soil and foamy soil.

Q 5 How can you classify soil on the basis of soil texture?

Cohesion is the tendency of the particles to stick to one another.

Plasticity is the property that enables a moist soil to change shape on the application of force and retain this shape even when the force is withdrawn.

Q 4 What is plasticity and cohesion?

Temperature, water, wind, plants and animals are different agents of physical weathering.

Q 3 What are the different agents of physical weathering?

The combined effect of physical, chemical and biological processes on the rocks to form the soil is known as weathering. There are two different types of weathering ------ physical and chemical.

Soil can be defined as the naturally occurring, loose covering of broken rock particles and decaying organic matter on the surface of the earth which is capable of supporting life.
